CITY OF LANETT

REGULAR SCHEDULED COUNCIL MEETING

January 17, 2006

 

The City Council of the City of Lanett, Alabama, met in regular session on Tuesday, January 17, 2006, in the Council Chambers of the Lanett Municipal Complex at 6:00 P.M.  The roll was taken and the following were found to be present: Councilmember Duskin, Councilmember Yarbrough, and Councilmember McCoy. Councilmember Malone and Councilmember Heard were absent.  Mayor Oscar Crawley was present and presided over the meeting.

 

Reverend Gary Armes said the invocation and led the pledge of allegiance.

 

Councilmember Duskin made the motion to adopt the prepared agenda. Councilmember McCoy seconded the motion. Motion unanimously carried.

 

Councilmember McCoy made the motion to dispense with reading and to adopt the minutes of the regular scheduled meeting of December 19, 2005.  Councilmember Yarbrough seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried.

 

Councilmember McCoy made a motion to adopt “Resolution 01-06-01 – Sell of Surplus Equipment. Seconded by Councilmember Duskin. Councilmember Duskin asked about the silent bidding on the surplus equipment.  Motion unanimously carried.

 

Councilmember McCoy made a motion to “Authorizing Negotiations for Valley Hanger Building.”  Seconded by Councilmember Yarbrough and Councilmember Duskin.  Motion unanimously carried.

 

Councilmember Duskin had nothing this evening.

 

Councilmember Yarbrough and the Lanett City Council wanted to recognize Lieutenant Richard Carter from graduating for FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.  Lieutenant Richard Carter studied for eleven weeks in applied criminology; legal issues for command level officers, interpersonal communication, and interview strategies through statement analysis and contemporary issues in drug law enforcement.  FBI Director Robert Mueller awarded Lieutenant Richard Carter his diploma and once he was nominated it normally takes five to ten years to be invited by the FBI to attend the academy.

 

Mayor Crawley invited the council and citizens for James A. Hardy Day on Saturday, January 21, 2006, at 2:00 P.M. at LB Sykes Junior High School.

 

City Manager Holley wanted to let the public know that the gas prices were coming down and this is a welcome relief. 

 

City Manager Holley asked the citizens to be patient, while the brush truck was being repaired. The brush truck should be back in operations on Wednesday, January 18, 2006.

 

City Manager Holley said the Lanett Police Department has a suspect in the recent stealing of City of Lanett signs throughout the city.

 

City Manager Holley told the council and citizens that he had talked with City Attorney Nix about the airport expansion.  Attorney Nix had talked with every owner of property needed for the sixty-eight (68) acres airport expansion and all the property owners were willing to sale.

City Manager Holley said the City of Lanett had sold sixty-five(65) E-heaters that would help reduce the cost of utility bills on customers. The company will be starting a national advertising campaign this week and Representative Mike Rogers also expressed interest in the concept earlier this week.

 

City Manager Holley said that a potential scams, involving the elderly citizens and that the elderly need to be aware of it. If anyone comes across the scam, please contact the Lanett Police Department.

 

Councilmember Dukin wanted to thank the people of Good Shepherd Ministries for doing an excellent job in cleaning up the area next to their building in downtown Lanett.

 

There being no further business to come before this Council, motion duly made, meeting was adjourned.
