CITY OF LANETT
REGULAR SCHEDULED COUNCIL MEETING
May 1, 2006
The City Council of the City of Lanett, Alabama, met in regular session on Monday, May 1, 2006, in the Council Chambers of the Lanett Municipal Complex at 6:00 P.M. The roll was taken and the following were found to be present: Councilmember Malone, Councilmember Duskin, Councilmember Heard, Councilmember McCoy, and Councilmember Yarbrough. Mayor Crawley was present and presided over the meeting.
City Manager Holley said the invocation and led the pledge of allegiance.
Councilmember McCoy made the motion to adopt the prepared agenda. Councilmember Duskin seconded the motion. Motion unanimously carried.
Councilmember Yarbrough made the motion to dispense with reading and to adopt the minutes of the regular scheduled meeting of April 17, 2006. Councilmember McCoy seconded the motion. Motion unanimously carried.
Councilmember Malone had nothing this evening.
Councilmember Heard made a motion to adopt “Resolution 05-06-01 – Street Department CDL Drivers to Grade V”. Motion seconded by Councilmember McCoy. Motion unanimously carried. Councilmember Malone asked if the City of Lanett would be going department by department in making changes to theses plans. Councilmember McCoy asks Superintendent Mike Bass to explain. Street Superintendent Mike Bass said that currently his drivers top out at a pay of $10.60 and going up on the classification will help give the drivers another step up on the pay scale.
Councilmember McCoy had a request for “Keandre Cardell Zachery – Restaurant Retail Liquor”. Councilmember McCoy asked Inspector Jerry Thrower if he had done the inspection and he said that he had done the inspection. Police Chief Docimo said he had done the background check and nothing turned up as a problem. Councilmember McCoy said that his concern was the location with the business being so close to a residential area and other businesses. Roll call vote as follows: Councilmember Malone – Yea, Councilmember Duskin – Nay, Councilmember Heard – Yea, Councilmember Yarbrough – Nay, Councilmember McCoy – Nay, and Mayor Crawley – Yea. Motion failed to carry.
Councilmember Duskin made a motion to adopt “Resolution 05-06-02 – Gas Supplied to Cusseta Industrial Park”. Motion seconded by Councilmember McCoy. Motion unanimously carried. Councilmember McCoy thanked all those involved for the hard work that made this resolution happen.
Councilmember Duskin said that the city’s Kia Liaison Committee had a meeting last Thursday April 27, 2006 and a lot good ideas were passed around. Councilmember Duskin said the City of Lanett Street is looking better.
Councilmember Yarbrough had nothing this evening other than to thank City Manager Holley Councilmember McCoy and Superintendent Ray on everything good going on in the City of Lanett.
Mayor Crawley said if you will look at the Valley Times News it said that Lanett will have “Take Pride Week” May 15-19. Mayor Crawley said the City of Lanett wants to ask the citizens of Lanett to get out and clean up. The City of Lanett will be giving out trash bags to the citizens. Superintendent Bass’s department will be coming by to pick them up. Mayor Crawley said that with the visitors coming we want the City of Lanett to be attractive.
City Manager Holley said to take a look at the front of Lanett City Hall where we have cleaned up and now have some Korean maples.
City Manager Holley wanted to address the logging truck problems on 18th Street and County Road 289. City Manager Holley said the logging trucks are tearing up our roads, driving to fast, and coming through the residential areas. City Manager Holley said he was working with Attorney Nix on an ordinance on this mater.
City Manager Holley said it would cost between $20,000.00 and $25,000.00 to fix the City of Lanett swimming pool property. The City of Lanett’s employees will do the painting.
The City of Lanett is waiting on the figures on the bid for a backhoe for the Street Department.
City Manager Holley said that 200 tickets are available for the City of Lanett “Fabulous 5” celebration for the Chambers County Hall of Fame in Lanett which will kick off the City of Lanett’s Arts and Craft Festival June 3, 2006. The tickets can be purchased at Lanett City Hall. City Manager Holley said that each of the honorees played at Lanett High School, Auburn University, and then played in the NFL. City Manager Holley said they are Richard Wood, Mailon Kent, Jimmy Jones, Bobby Hunt and David Hill.
Councilmember Malone asked if any of the honorees were white. City Manager Holley said that the City of Lanett is not trying to not include anyone because of race.
City Manger Holley said the City of Lanett would be manning the Huguley Fire Station in June 2006.
City Manger Holley said the work at the Lanett Airport is ongoing.
They’re being no further business, to come before this Council, motion duly made, and meeting was adjourned.
