CITY OF LANETT

REGULAR SCHEDULED COUNCIL MEETING

July 16, 2007

 

The City Council of the City of Lanett, Alabama, met in regular session on Monday, July 16, 2007, in the Council Chambers of the Lanett Municipal Complex at 6:00 P.M.  The roll was taken and the following were found to be present: Councilmember Tony Malone, Jamie Heard, Kyle McCoy, John Duskin and Mike Yarbrough.  Mayor Oscar Crawley was present and presided over the meeting.

 

Reverend Gary Armes said the invocation and led the pledge of allegiance.

 

Councilmember Duskin made the motion to adopt the prepared agenda.  Councilmember Heard seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried.

 

Councilmember Yarbrough made the motion to dispense with reading and to adopt the minutes of the regular scheduled meeting of June 18, 2007.  Councilmember McCoy seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried.

 

Councilmember Malone presented “Proclamation – Chamber County Day of Prayer”.  Dianne Perry was presented with the proclamation and she thanked the Mayor and Council.

 

Councilmember Malone asked Recreation Director Ronnie Tucker what activities are going on in the Recreation Department this summer.  Director Ronnie Tucker said that the City of Lanett had adult aerobics, summer league men’s basketball; swimming pool is open and teaching karate.

 

Councilmember Malone also had question for Fire Chief Tim Jennings and Code Enforcement Officer Lincoln Whaley, but Mayor Crawley would not let Councilmember Malone ask any questions.

 

Councilmember Heard read “Resolution 07-07-04 – Purchase Bus From ALDOT”.  Councilmember Heard made a motion to adopt “Resolution 07-07-04 – Purchase Bus From ALDOT”.    Councilmember Yarbrough seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried.

 

City Manager Holley explained that the City of Lanett had grants to purchase six buses.  City Manager Holley said that the City of Lanett did not need the bus so East Alabama Mental Health was transferred the bus.

 

Councilmember McCoy read “Resolution 07-07-05 – Bid Acceptance on Airport Fuel Rehab” and the lowest bid was Southern Petroleum for $31,150.00.  Councilmember McCoy made a motion to adopt “Resolution 07-07-05 – Bid Acceptance on Airport Fuel Rehab”. Councilmember Duskin and Councilmember Yarbrough seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried. 

 

Councilmember Malone asked who was looking after the City of Lanett Airport.  Councilmember McCoy said nobody is looking after the airport until the airport is ready to be re-opened.

 

Councilmember McCoy read “Resolution 07-07-06 – Bid Acceptance on Airport Apron” and the lowest bid was Chris Clark Grading and Paving Inc. for $82,105.00 Councilmember McCoy made a motion to adopt “Resolution 07-07-06 – Bid Acceptance on Airport Apron”. Councilmember Yarbrough seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried.

 

Councilmember Duskin read “Resolution 07-07-01 – Street Sweeper Bid Award” and the lowest bid was Schwarze Industries for $86,600.00.  Councilmember Duskin made a motion to adopt Resolution 07-07-01 – Street Sweeper Bid Award”.  Councilmember McCoy seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried. 

 

Councilmember Duskin read “Resolution 07-07-02 – Water and Sewer Tap Fees”. Councilmember Duskin made a motion to adopt Resolution 07-07-02 – Water and Sewer Tap Fees”. Councilmember McCoy seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried.

 

Councilmember Duskin said that the seniors are invited to Color Vision for a movie and popcorn every third Tuesday in the month. 

 

 

 

 

Councilmember Yarbrough made a motion to appoint Teddy Morris to permanent Police Chief.  Councilmember Heard seconded the motion. Councilmember Malone – Nay, Councilmember Heard – Yea, Councilmember McCoy – Yea, Councilmember Duskin – Yea, Councilmember Yarbrough – Yea and Mayor Crawley – Yea.  Motion carried.  Councilmember Malone said that his vote was not against Chief Teddy Morris; it was the way the procedures were handled.

 

Police Chief Teddy Morris wanted to thank everyone and I will do my best to run the department.

 

Councilmember Yarbrough read  “Resolution 07-07-03 – Police Car Bid Award” and the lowest bid was Carl Gregory Dodge of Columbus, Inc. for $20,151.00, to replace a police vehicle that had 214,000 miles.  Councilmember Yarbrough made a motion to adopt  “Resolution 07-07-03 – Police Car Bid Award”.  Councilmember McCoy seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried.  

 

Councilmember Yarbrough wanted to thank Chief Teddy Morris for accepting the position.

 

Chief Teddy Morris was sworn in at the end of the Lanett City Council Meeting.  Pastor David Benton (his pastor) swore him in along with Mayor Crawley, Betty Tyner (his sister), Elijah Johnson (his brother), Irelia Magby (his mother-in-law), Tammy Morris (his wife), and City Manger Joel Holley.

 

There being no further business to come before this Council, motion duly made, meeting was adjourned at 6:25 P.M.
