CITY OF LANETT

REGULAR SCHEDULED COUNCIL MEETING

October 2, 2006

 

The City Council of the City of Lanett, Alabama, met in regular session on Monday, October 2, 2006, in the Council Chambers of the Lanett Municipal Complex at 6:00 P.M.  The roll was taken and the following were found to be present: Councilmember Malone, Councilmember Duskin, Councilmember Heard, Councilmember Yarbrough, and Councilmember McCoy.  Mayor Crawley was present and presided over the meeting.

 

City Manager Holley said the invocation and led the pledge of allegiance.

 

Councilmember McCoy made the motion to adopt the prepared agenda.  Councilmember Duskin seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried.

 

Councilmember McCoy made the motion to dispense with reading and to adopt the minutes of the regular scheduled meeting of September 18, 2006.  Councilmember Heard seconded the motion.  Motion unanimously carried.

 

Mayor Crawley said that he is retired from WestPoint Home after thirty-four (34) years and I will be a full time mayor. Mayor Crawley said that he would be at the Lanett City Hall everyday with City Manager Holley and the Department Heads.

 

Councilmember Malone presented and read “Proclamation – Mary Sue Smith”. Councilmember Malone said that Mary Sue Smith could not be here to receive the proclamation due to death in the family.

 

Councilmember Malone said he is very displeased with the way the utility disconnections are being handled.  Councilmember Malone stated that he had numerous calls about the cut off list and the City of Lanett did not work with the customers on their utility bills.  Councilmember Malone told fellow Councilmembers that the City of Lanett must come up with a system on disconnection before the winter months.  Councilmember Malone made a motion for the disconnections to be handled through the city treasurer, city clerk or their designee and not through the city manager.  Attorney Nix said that before a motion is made there should be a motion to amend the agenda.  Councilmember Malone made a motion to amend the agenda.  Motion seconded by Councilmember Heard.  Motion unanimously carried.  Councilmember Malone made a motion for the utility disconnection to handle by the city treasurer, city clerk or their designee and not through the city manager.  Roll call vote as follows:  Councilmember Malone – Yea, Councilmember Heard – Yea, Councilmember McCoy – Nay, Councilmember Duskin – Nay, Councilmember Yarbrough – Nay, and Mayor Crawley – Yea.  Motion was denied.

 

 

Councilmember Heard had nothing this evening.

 

Councilmember McCoy made a motion “Smoke House Grill (owners Rick and Robin Schlee) – Restaurant Lounge Liquor Pouring License”.  Councilmember Yarbrough seconded the motion. Motion unanimously carried.  Councilmember Malone asked if there were any problem surrounding the motion to grant the Smoke House Grill Lounge License.  Roll call vote as follows: Councilmember Malone – Yea, Councilmember Heard – Yea, Councilmember McCoy – Yea, Councilmember Duskin – Yea, Councilmember Yarbrough – Yea and Mayor Crawley – Yea. Motion unanimously carried.

 

Councilmember McCoy thanked the Recreation Department for the hard work they done on the Morgan-Washburn Stadium dedication.

 

Councilmember Duskin said the only thing he had was to discuss further to Councilmember Malone about the vote of no on the issue of disconnection.

 

Councilmember Yarbrough had nothing this evening and the only thing he had was what a great job the City of Lanett employees did on the stadium dedication.

 

Mayor Crawley recognized School Board Chairwoman Gwen Harris Brooks and Superintendent Charles Looser as well as the committee for their work on the dedication of the Morgan -Washburn Stadium.

 

 

 

 

There being no further business to come before this Council, motion duly made, meeting adjourned.
